Our Veterinarians

Dr. Mark Wallar

Graduated from OVC (Ontario Veterinary College) in 1979, and has been a partner at OVH since 1983. Within the practice, Dr. Wallar has a special interest in critical care and orthopedics. Outside of work the Wallar family consists of wife Jocelyn, son Matthew, daughter Kathryn and nephew Joseph who keep busy with a variety of activities. Hockey, skiing, golf, gymnastics, riding, scuba and Tae Kwon Do keep the family and the car in perpetual motion.

Dr. Sue Armstrong

Sue graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1984. She and her husband Mark live in Dunrobin with their three senior cats Dan, Emily, and Diva. They are currently "between" dogs, and still miss their Boxer Katie very much. Sue loves reading and running – especially long distance; Sue has been a member of the Canadian National 24-Hour Ultramarathon team several times, and currently serves on the Association of Canadian Ultramarathoners Medical Committee.

Dr. John Swatman

Dr. Swatman joined the team at the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital in the spring of 1999. He has always enjoyed the mix of emergency/critical care work along with seeing his regular clients for preventive health care. Working along side of the incredible team of receptionists, technicians and veterinarians has always been Dr. Swatman's fortune since joining the veterinary group. He is very proud of the work that he and his colleagues perform every day at the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Carol Ann Galway

Dr. Carol Ann Galway graduated from Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph in 1986. She practiced for two years in Newfoundland before returning to Ottawa and joining the team of Ottawa Veterinary Hospital where she has been for the past 22 years. Dr Galway can usually be seen on our emergency shifts where she enjoys the variety and challenges presented by emergency medicine.

Carol Ann enjoys reading, needlework, canoeing and hiking.

Dr. Charles Garneau-So

Charles graduated from UCD (University College Dublin) in 2013. He is originally from Quebec City, but moved to Ottawa as a child. He attended the University of Ottawa, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in Biology in 2009. He has been part of the OVH team since October of this year. His hobbies include cycling and hiking, and he holds certification as a PADI scuba diver. At home, he rescued a 3 year old retired racing greyhound named Maggie, who keeps him busy on a daily basis.

Dr. Vir Hans

Graduated in 2006 from Gadvasu, India. Received her license to practice veterinary medicine in Canada in 2009. Dr. Hans joined The Ottawa Veterinary Hospital team in 2012 after working at the Pembroke Animal Hospital in Pembroke, Ontario since 2009. Enjoys painting with water colours in her free time and exploring the outdoors with her husband Raman and daughter Ramneek. Two pets (cats): Leon & Star.

Dr. Kristin Isnor

Dr. Kristin Isnor joined the team at the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital in 2011, after graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. Previously, she had completed a four year honours degree in zoology and psychology at the University of Western Ontario in London.

Having grown up in and around the GTA, she is very excited to experience Ottawa's culture, history, and outdoor activities (as well as avoiding all of the traffic!). In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cottaging, and improving her golf game. She and her partner Justin are enjoying raising Digby, their golden retriever puppy.

Dr. Etienne Ranger

Etienne was born and raised in Ottawa's east end. He attended the University of Ottawa in biology before going to the Ontario Veterinary College where he graduated in 2006. He worked in both Kingston and Mississauga before coming to the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital. He currently lives with his wife, Corinne, and their two Boston Terriers, Isidore and Fleurette.

Dr. Betty Szyngiel

Dr. Betty Szyngiel graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2000. She is originally from Pierrefonds, Quebec (a suburb of Montreal). She came to the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital in January of 2002 after working in a mixed animal practice in Carleton Place, Ontario.

Dr. Szyngiel enjoys playing volleyball and tennis, soccer, riding horses, downhill skiing and making a general nuisance of herself (her words not ours!).

Her furry masters include two cats (Willa and Silou).

Dr. Orisha Yacyshyn

After completing her Master of Science at the University of Toronto, Orisha left the world of research to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. In 2011, she graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College and joined the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital. Although raised in Toronto, Orisha is excited to be living in Ottawa and able to pursue her interest in emergency medicine. In her spare time, Orisha keeps active by riding, playing badminton, hockey and golf, and spending time exploring the outdoors. Orisha also enjoys teaching a variety of tricks to her young kitten, Millie.

Dr. Meagan Pinon (Marshall)

Dr. Meagan Pinon graduated with distinction from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2014 after completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph in Animal Biology. She joined the team at the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital in the fall of 2014 to pursue a career in emergency medicine. Her passion for helping animals in need is also why you may find her treating and caring for the homeless animals at the Ottawa Humane Society during her time off. Dr. Pinon grew up in the Ottawa Valley and now lives in Perth where she enjoys swimming, fishing and camping with her husband Tim.

Dr. Allison Pender

Allison attended the University of Guelph for her undergraduate degree in Biological Science, then continued on to complete her DVM degree at the Ontario Veterinary College in 2015. She is originally from the Toronto area, but is excited to be in Ottawa to join a number of family members in the area and explore this great city. Allison is thrilled to be joining the great team at the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital to pursue a number of ever-growing interests in veterinary medicine. Allison enjoys swimming, visiting the family cottage and exploring what Ottawa has to offer. She is also kept very busy by her fur babies, Dozer the lab mix and Oliver the shorthaired tuxedo cat.

Dr. Melissa Lo

Dr. Melissa Lo joined the team at the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital in 2015 after graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College. She previously attended McMaster University in Hamilton, completing a Bachelor of Science in biology. Originally from the GTA, Melissa is excited to explore Ottawa. In her spare time, she enjoys travelling, exploring new cultures, trying new restaurants, hiking and baking. At home, she has a cat named Charlotte and is looking forward to adopting a dog.

Dr. Justin Guay

Dr. Justin Guay graduated from The Ontario Veterinary College in 2015. He is originally from Sudbury, Ontario. He has practiced veterinary medicine in many countries and often finds himself traveling to different Humane Societies around the world to help with the local spay/neuter programs. He has participated in the Dog Guide program for 2 years and will continue to help out where he can. He has a keen interest in emergency and critical care medicine and pet nutrition.

He loves to stay active and enjoys going for a jog outdoors. He has a special passion for soccer. He has played for over 20 years, coached for 4 years and loves watching the game.
